Born in England in 1931, Barrie Cooke grew up in Bermuda and Jamaica. He studied art history at Harvard and in 1954 he moved to Ireland where he still lives.
Cooke has travelled extensively in far flung regions such as New Zealand, Lapland, Borneo and Malaya.
These diverse environments fuel his deep interest in the environment and sense of habitat. Themes such as the eutrophication of the Irish waterways concerns him. A passionate fisherman, he lives somewhat reclusively in County Sligo surrounded by the beauty of Lough Arrow.
His studies with Kokoschka in Austria in the 1950s was the starting point for the development of his lush, abstract expressionist style.
Barrie Cooke is a member of Aosdana and in 2003 there was a major retrospective of his work at the Royal Hibernian Academy.
His work is held in collections worldwide.
