Auerbach is recognised internationally as a modern master. Along with Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud he is seen as a leading figure in British art.
Born in Berlin in 1931, he arrived in Britain as a refugee in 1939. He studied at St Martin's School of Art and at The Royal College of Art in London. He graduated from the latter with a First Class Honours Silver Medal.
His early contact with the Vorticist Group laid the foundations for his deep concern with tangible surface and thorough analysis of the object viewed.
Auerbach rarely travels and has had the same studio since the 1950's.
His principle models are his wife Julia ( Juliet Yardley Mills ) and his close friend Estella West.
His work has featured at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, The Tate London and The British Pavillion in Venice Biennale.
