Ross Fine Art
John O’Connell has had solo exhibitions in Ireland, the UK and the US. His work is in a number of public collections, including those of the Hilton Group and the BBC, and in private collections across Europe and in the US.
His latest show includes still life, nudes and a number of landscapes featuring scenes in Donegal.
Janet Ross, who runs Ross Fine Art, said she was delighted to get the chance to show these latest works.
“We’ve carried paintings by John O’Connell since we opened here almost two years ago and they’ve generated a lot of interest,” she said. “This is a whole new body of bright vibrant work in his own recognizable expressionistic style. In particular the Donegal scenes are fabulous, semi-abstract landscapes. I think he’s a very collectable painter who’s a real artist’s artist.”
John O’Connell is originally from Derry, where he was born in 1935, but has been working for many years in Belfast.
He said, “I’m really delighted to have this solo show in Ramelton as I’ve drawn a lot of inspiration from the landscape in Donegal over the years, in company with many other artists. That’s reflected in the work in this show.
“More generally, I’m interested in the raw power of complementary colours in these paintings. I love the work of all the colourists, from the Post-Impressionists through the Fauves and other groups, moving on to artists like de Stael and Rothko.”
